Perhaps not coincidentally, Albany was the birthplace of Charles Hoy Fort, an American writer and researcher into “anomalous phenomena” – that is, the unexplained. Today, the terms Fortean and Forteana are used to characterize various such phenomena. Anyone with more than a passing interest in the supernatural or paranormal owes him, and his research, a debt. He is buried in Albany Rural Cemetery and, while that is not a stop on this tour, we can safely say that his presence is a kind of invisible mascot for us on these tours, as we sift among Albany’s inexplicable lore.
